Ecommerce: B2B >2 B2C and growing

Posted by Michael Hawksley on Fri, Apr 24, 2015

b2b-b2c_ecommerceMost people assume that B2C ecommerce is the “big brother” and B2B is trailing way behind, but it is time to think again. Research from Forrester shows that, in the US, B2B ecommerce is now twice the size of B2C ecommerce and predicts that B2B ecommerce sales in the US will reach $780 billion by the end of 2015. That represents 9.3% of all B2B sales!

Equivalent European B2B figures are not available (let me know if you can find some!) but European ecommerce market as a whole is dominated by the big three (UK, Germany and France) which together are responsible for 81.3% of European ecommerce sales. This is predicted to reach $236 billion in 2015 with an average rate of growth of 25.2% for the big three.

Watch out for bad grammar in European search trends!

Posted by Tereza Santava on Fri, Apr 17, 2015

If you want to be visible in your target export market online, you need to optimize your website for local search engines, such as google.de in Germany or google.fr in France. You might laugh that we call this global search engine giant local, but that is indeed the truth. Over 90% of searches in most European countries come from local Googles that show different search results. Remember, you cannot simply translate a well performing US keyword to Spanish or Dutch and expect to see the same results. Search trends, including keywords popularity and difficulty to rank, vary among markets.

TTIP: On and on and...

Posted by John Worthington on Fri, Apr 03, 2015

ttip_guy_flags-v2

The European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, is Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) focused! Promises of transparency, accessibility, information sharing were made and it seems that she is attempting to do all that while keeping the TTIP road show on track. Check out the new updated EC TTIP pages: http://trade.ec.europa.eu/doclib/press/index.cfm?id=1230. Addressing the concerns raised by the TTIP anti’s, Malmstrom declares, “The EU and US reiterate that trade agreements don’t stop governments from providing or supporting services in areas like water, education, health, and social services…”, then goes onto “EC publishes TTIP legal texts as part of transparency initiative” and of course for Germany, the EC published the results of consultation on investment protection, investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS). Hot from the press, we have Cecilia getting personal, sharing her brand new brochure with us, all about “the false claims being made about TTIP – and what the reality actually is”. Check it out, it is a good read.

Webinars work...

Posted by John Worthington on Fri, Apr 03, 2015

Susanna Hardy, our web-savvy Managing Director – EU, had a great month “webinaring”. Susanna prepared, presented (audio and visual) and fielded the follow-ups from two webinars. She worked closely with our clients the Maine International Trade Center (MITC), Maine’s leading source for international business assistance as well as the Food Export Association of the Midwest USA and Food Export USA Northeast, who both did a great job hosting and moderating. Our sincere thanks go to Wade Merritt (Vice President) and Hannah Webb (Trade Assistance Manager) from the MITC team and John Belmont (Communications Manager), Joe Yotti (Branded Program Manager) and Kathryn Navarro (International Marketing Program Assistant) from the Food Export Association of the Midwest USA and Food Export USA Northeast team. The webinars were well attended and a great success. Attendees were selected and invited on the basis of their interest in growing their exports and the webinars proved educational and informative. Lots of time was dedicated to interactive questions as participants asked a range of export, ecommerce related questions and receiving informed answers. For MITC the subject was: “Grow your exports and business in Europe: Using online and ecommerce opportunities", presented on Wednesday the 18th of March and the next week on Tuesday the 24th March with the Food Export Association of the Midwest USA and Food Export USA Northeast, were pleased to present the webinar: "Building Your Online Presence to Boost Exports: Europe as a Case Study".

How many languages can you speak sufficiently well to communicate with your fellow humans? Today's hyper-connected world enjoys approximately 6,500 languages, shared amongst >7 Bn people spread across >169 countries. So how do you feel now? Belittled? I do. Language, and communication between differing languages, is an issue that humankind has faced for a wee while now. Now, where did all these languages come from?

Posted by Michael Hawksley on Mon, Mar 23, 2015

I read an interesting article by Jayson DeMers in the Forbes that shared a report from Shareaholic. Based on the 340k websites in the Shareaholic network then, as of December 2014, social media is now the #1 driver of all website referral accounting for 31.24% compared to the 22.71% from the same period in the previous year.

April will mix up mobile search results as Google introduces a new ranking factor

Posted by Tereza Santava on Mon, Mar 23, 2015

It was predicted that 2014 would have been a milestone, when the number of Google searches carried out on mobile devices would surpass that of PCs. Although Google remains secretive about the exact proportion of mobile versus desktop search, it is estimated that half of searches do indeed come from smartphones and tablets.

TTIP sexy right now?

Posted by John Worthington on Thu, Mar 05, 2015

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) “is an issue that is sexy right now”, according to European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, commenting on 23rd February while attending the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) conference on the subject. TTIP might be sexy, but there is no love these days as EU opposition is growing and consolidating. This could be considered rather sad given the worthy transatlantic vision of deeper European and American economic co-operation and integration, driven essentially by lower tariffs and reduced regulatory barriers. But from Germany, via France all the way to Greece, protagonists at this time on euro issues, have a common beef against TTIP.

Love and trade fairs...

Posted by John Worthington on Thu, Mar 05, 2015

Trade fairs are a wonderful export and international business development tool. When well-managed (from selection, to planning, through preparation, attendance and crucially follow-up) they can be hugely influential, highly cost-effective and a big generator of new, as well as extending existing, business. They can also bring unique opportunities to visit faraway places, meet friends, colleagues, competitors and start a whole new social life and fall in love. A few years ago, a French member of our business development team attended a hospitality trade fair in Paris. Being a vigilant young man, he spotted an intelligent, beautiful young Italian lady. Suffice it to say, I recall that the end of the 4 day event, during which time we saw very little of either of them, was a very sad occasion. As life’s rich pattern flows, so did they. Within 6 months, we had a team member based in Italy as he relocated to Milan. They are now happily married, with two children!

The big "e" in commerce

Posted by John Worthington on Fri, Jan 30, 2015

Today, commerce in Europe is all about the e’s; there are 2, but add a 3rd in front and you have it. Everywhere (note 4 e’s) we look for opportunities and growth we find a big bold "e" written. The big EU stories for 2015 will be ecommerce; ecommerce will continue its boom across Europe this year, growing at a very healthy >18%. The figure for 2014 was 18%, 22% in 2013 and 2016 is projected at 19%. FYI, this compares to the US where online sales are expected to grow in 2015 at 14%.
